Internal Aussie Pairs Competition

 25-Sep-2024  Website Editor

Many congratulations to Keith Maywhort and John Turner who beat Phil Clarke and Tom Broughton in a 15-end Aussie Pairs Internal Competition Final match. The last end began 13 points each, and the win, by one shot, was only secured on the very last bowl in what had been a very closely fought match in surprisingly warm and sunny conditions.

Peter Ward Club Cup Winner(s)

Chaitman Phil congratulating the winners

The annual Peter Ward Club Cup was played on Friday 13th Spetember.  Perhaps the date kept our more superstitious members away. Whatever the reason, the event was poorly supported and ended up being played by just eight members.  Thank you to the players that did make the effort.

The match was played over three rounds of five ends with partners and rinks being drawn between each round. Remarkably, Robert Lee and David Hilton were drawn together on all three rounds and were on ring two for all rounds. Congratulations to them both on their 16 points win, beating Phil Carke by two points and Neville by three.

Sue Hallam Cup Winner

 24-Aug-2024  KM

The Sue Hallam Cup, held in fond memeory of Sue was played yeterday and the weather was perfect, if a little windy.

There was a slightly reduced turnout due to the National competitions taking place at Skegness where a number of our members were successfully involved (see separate news item).

The comp format was- teams picked by ballot with 3 lots of five ends; the teams being reselected after each set of five ends.

A good afternoon was had by all with Chris Thatcher coming third with 16 points, Chris Garner second with 19 points and the winner was Phil Clarke with 22 points- congratulations Phil.

Notts Fed Finals Day

 14-Aug-2024  KM

On Sunday the 11th August we once again hosted the Notts Federation Finals day.  The weather was fantastic and a there were a large number of spectators and supporters.  Once again, the green was in great condition offering fast, true bowling.  The Club also provided refreshments, the proceeds of which helped to bolster the Club's coffers.

A good day was had by all.

Club going from strength to strength

Eric Leedham, a resident of East Bridgford, celebrated his 100th birthday in November 2021. Until the pandemic intervened, he had also been an active playing member of the bowls club, starting in 1986.  During the ensuing years, he won a number of internal competitions and served as Treasurer for 10 years, until he handed it over aged 90. Even then, he continued until recently to organise roll-up sessions and then in the winter, play indoor short-mat bowls in the village hall, a separate club which takes place on Monday and Thursday afternoons during the autumn and winter.

The outdoor bowls club itself has had some very successful seasons. Membership has risen to 40, including Eric's well-deserved Life Membership. Apart from the popular mid-week roll-up sessions, the club plays in four leagues, all with mixed teams. The club has won the Trent Valley League knock-out cup in 2021 and 2022, and came top of the Sat Fed 28-end League in both 2022 and 2023.

One of our members, Sandra Maguire, became the Senior Women's Champion at the national finals in Leamington in 2021, and in 2023 Tom Broughton and Phil Clarke won the LCBS 2w Mens' pairs cup.

Our green, maintained by members, is regarded as one of the best in the County, and is regularly used by representative sides as well as for various finals, including those run by County & League organisations. Recently, it was used to demo a new electric mower, starriing some of our greenkeeping team ! ( See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD44S09rLgo ).

For several years, we have been able to offer sessions for St. Peter's Academy children and the Explorers section of the Scouts, showing that lawn green bowling is definitely a sport for all ages!
